Captain Will Sutherland held his nerve under pressure, smashing two sixes in the final over to guide Melbourne Renegades to a dramatic four-wicket win over arch-rivals Melbourne Stars at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Chasing 174, the Renegades needed 13 runs from the final over. Sutherland set the tone by launching Marcus Stoinis over the leg side for six. With three required from the last two balls, he struck another six straight back over the bowler’s head to seal the victory with one ball remaining, sending a crowd of more than 65,000 fans into celebration.
Earlier, Renegades were cruising at 127-1, before a sudden collapse threatened to derail the chase. Opener Josh Brown was bowled for an impressive 84, triggering a slump that saw the side lose five wickets for 34 runs, including Mohammad Rizwan for 41.
Sutherland remained calm in the chaos, finishing unbeaten on 19 from just seven balls, to secure Renegades’ second win of the season.
The Stars, who could have moved to the top of the standings with a win, posted 173-9 after a steady but unspectacular innings. England all-rounder Tom Curran top-scored with 38, while Campbell Kellaway (33) and Hilton Cartwright (28) made useful contributions.
However, regular wickets prevented the Stars from building momentum, and the Renegades capitalised late to snatch a thrilling derby victory.
